3 Ways to Make Soap Molds
Soap making is a rewarding hobby that allows you to create beautiful and functional pieces for yourself, your family, and even to sell or give as gifts. One of the essential tools needed for this fun and creative activity are soap molds. Soap molds come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, but they can also be quite expensive if you start purchasing them from specialty stores. To help you save some money and explore the creative side of soap making, we will discuss three ways to make soap molds at home.
1. Silicone Soap Molds
Silicone is a versatile and widely used material for soap molds because it is non-stick, flexible, and heat resistant. You can create your silicone soap mold by following these steps:
- Choose an object (e.g., decorative figurine or small container) that you want to replicate as a soap mold.
- Create a mold box by building a small structure out of foam core board or 3D printed containers, which will hold the silicone while creating the mold.
- Mix the silicone molding compound according to the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
- Pour the mixed silicone into your mold box until it completely covers your chosen object. Ensure there are no air bubbles within the mixture.
- Allow the silicone to cure fully as per the manufacturer’s recommended timeframe.
- Gently remove your object from the cured silicone mold.
2. Wooden Soap Molds
Wooden soap molds give a more traditional or rustic appearance to finished soaps, perfect for those who prefer an artisan touch. To make wooden soap molds:
- Determine the size of your soap bars and cut four pieces of untreated plywood (two sides, one base, and one top) to create a rectangular box shape.
- Assemble your wooden box using wood glue, clamps, and screws/nails for reinforcement. Ensure that your box is watertight.
- Apply a layer of freezer paper or plastic wrap to line the inside of your wooden mold, which will help with easy removal of the finished soap.
- Pour cooled soap into the wooden mold, cover with the top piece, and insulate with towels or blankets to help the soap maintain its heat during the curing process.
3. PVC Pipe Molds
For a simple and inexpensive way to make round soap molds, PVC pipes are an excellent option. Follow these steps:
- Cut a PVC pipe into desired lengths for your soap bars using a saw or ask for assistance at a hardware store.
- Clean and sand any rough edges on the pipe pieces.
- Place plastic wrap or freezer paper at one end of each pipe and secure with an elastic band or duct tape to create a watertight base.
- Stand your PVC pipes vertically on a tray or baking sheet and pour in your cooled soap mixture.
- Once the soap has fully cured, push out your solidified round soaps by applying steady pressure from one end of the pipe.
These three methods offer you different ways to create custom soap molds at home without breaking the bank. Experiment with shapes, materials, and designs to find what works best for you and create beautiful handmade soaps tailored precisely to your preferences!
