3 Ways to Make an Easel
An easel is a versatile tool for artists and display enthusiasts alike. It provides a stable surface for painting, drawing, or showcasing your latest work. In this article, we’ll explore three ways you can make your own easel at home using materials that are readily available.
1. Simple Wood Easel
For this easel design, you will need four wooden dowels or posts, a wooden crossbeam, wood screws, a drill, and wood glue. Follow these steps for a simple but effective wooden easel:
a) Cut two of the dowels as the main support legs and make them the desired height you want your easel.
b) Cut the third dowel into two shorter pieces to be used as the crossbeam which will provide added stability.
c) Attach the crossbeam pieces near the top and bottom of each main support leg by drilling pilot holes on each end and using wood screws to secure them.
d) For the fourth dowel, cut it into horizontal support pieces for holding your canvas or other art supplies.
e) Attach the horizontal support pieces to the main support legs with wood glue.
f) Allow your DIY easel to fully dry before using it.
2. Cardboard Easel
A cardboard easel is perfect for those who need something lightweight and inexpensive. You will need a large sheet of sturdy cardboard, a ruler, scissors or a box cutter, tape or glue, and markers for decorating (optional).
a) Cut out two large triangles from the cardboard sheet; they should be identical and large enough to hold your canvas or display piece securely.
b) Fold one side of each triangle inwards about 1 inch to create a ledge that will keep your canvas in place.
c) Attach the two triangles together at the top point using either tape or glue.
d) Customize your cardboard easel by adding designs or painting it with markers.
e) Once the adhesive has dried, your cardboard easel is ready to use.
2. PVC Pipe Easel
For a more durable option that can be disassembled and stored easily, consider using PVC pipes. You will need 1/2 inch PVC pipes, two 90-degree elbow pieces, two T-joint pieces, four end cap pieces, a hacksaw or pipe cutter, and PVC primer and cement.
a) Cut four equal length pieces of PVC pipe for the legs.
b) Attach one end cap to the bottom of each leg.
c) Connect two T-joint pieces to the top of two separate legs with a small section of PVC pipe between them. These will act as your front-facing legs.
d) Cut and attach an additional pipe to the top of the T-joint to function as a horizontal support for your canvas.
e) For the rear legs, attach an elbow piece to the top of both remaining legs.
f) Cut a longer PVC pipe to connect both rear legs through the elbow joints.
g) Apply primer then cement to join all your connections securely.
These three DIY methods for making an easel offer options that cater to various budgets and artistic preferences. Challenge yourself by creating one of these easels from scratch, ensuring that your artwork stands tall and proud at home or on display.
