3 Ways to Make a Duck Costume
Dressing up as a duck can be fun for people of all ages, and it makes for a perfect Halloween costume, play outfit or just a humorous approach to entertain kids or friends. With just a few materials and some creativity, you can make your own duck costume without breaking the bank. Here are three easy methods to create an adorable and affordable duck costume.
1. The DIY Duck Onesie:
Materials:
– Yellow onesie or sweatshirt and pants
– Orange fabric
– Soft yellow fabric
– Scissors
– Hot glue gun or fabric glue
– White felt or fabric (optional)
Instructions:
First, find a yellow onesie, sweatshirt, or pair of pants that will serve as the base of your duck costume. Next, cut out two large oval shapes from the soft yellow fabric for the duck’s belly. If you’d like to add a white feathered pattern, cut out several small teardrop shapes from white felt or fabric and glue them onto one of the yellow ovals in layers.
Once your belly is complete, use hot glue or fabric glue to attach it to the front of your onesie or shirt. For the feet, cut out two large webbed shapes from the orange fabric and secure them around your shoes using hot glue or safety pins.
2. The Paper Plate Duck Mask:
Materials:
– White paper plates
– Yellow construction paper
– Orange construction paper
– Paint (yellow and white)
– Paintbrushes
– Scissors
– Glue stick
– Black marker
Instructions:
Start by painting one side of the paper plate with yellow paint as the base color. Once it dries, add some white strokes on top for added texture. Cut out two eyeholes using scissors.
Next, cut out a beak shape from orange construction paper along with two circles for eyes from yellow construction paper. Use the black marker to draw pupils onto the yellow circles. Finally, glue the beak and eyes onto the painted paper plate and let it dry completely. Once it’s dry, punch holes on each side of the plate and attach strings or elastic cords to make your mask wearable.
3. The Duck Tutu Ensemble:
Materials:
– Yellow tulle
– Elastic waistband (or ribbon)
– Scissors
– Safety pins (optional)
Instructions:
Measure the length of tulle you’ll need for your desired tutu width, then multiply it by 2. Cut multiple strips of that measurement from the yellow tulle. Fold each strip in half, with the fold forming a loop.
If using an elastic waistband, measure it to fit comfortably around your waist and cut the desired size, leaving a small allowance to connect the ends. If using a ribbon, cut enough length to wrap around your waist and tie a bow at the back.
Place the elastic or ribbon on a flat surface. Slide each strip under the band ensuring that the loop is at one end while about equal lengths of tulle hang at the other end. Thread these loose ends through that loop and pull tight to secure it to your band. Repeat until you’ve completed your duck tutu.
Combine your chosen costume pieces from these three methods for a convincingly cute duck outfit that will surely turn heads at any event!
